Program Overview
More than 4.5 million American men, women, and children - or about 1 in 50 Americans - have psoriasis. Each year 150,000 to 260,000 cases of psoriasis are diagnosed and exceed three billion dollars annually in treatment costs. People who have psoriasis also have a 10 to 30 percent chance of developing psoriatic arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation in and around the joints, such as the wrists, knees, ankles, lower back, and neck.
Patients who have psoriatic conditions with arthritis often seek treatment from a rheumatology professional. These patients look to the rheumatologist and rheumatology nurse for healthcare guidance, as well as counseling to help them better understand and manage their disease as it manifests within joints.
With the evolution of new therapies, patients with psoriatic conditions have an opportunity to improve their health to a greater extent. Adherence to new therapeutic regimens, in conjunction with a strong and knowledgeable support system, will allow these patients to realize gains never before expected in this population. It is the rheumatology professional who will play important a pivotal role in the lives of these patients by helping them understand their disease and the importance of therapeutic adherence.
This activity will meet the educational needs of rheumatology specialists regarding the treatment of patients with psoriatic conditions. The activity provides the latest medical information regarding the diagnosis and management of psoriatic conditions, the pharmacological agents available for treating patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and the best methods of patient counseling.
